Accelerated regeneration is the ability of a hybrid to rapidly heal themselves from physical injuries. It is featured prominently throughout the Species film series. It works depending on the hybrid's health and is not effective against fire or human blood containing elements from which the Species has no immune defense, such as human genetic diseases.
Occurrences[]
Species[]
Tricked by her human appearance, John took Sil to a hospital after she was hit by a car in Los Angeles. The hybrid reconstituted herself in front of her doctor's eyes, leaving him startled. Fully recovered, she simply walked away from the hospital, also impressing John with her harmless state.
Escaping from Xavier Finch's team and wanting unquestionable evidence that she had been killed, Sil kidnapped a human woman and displayed her regenerating ability to her, by chopping off the thumb and growing a new one. This terrified her hostage.
Species II[]
Laura demonstrated Eve's regenerating ability to the U.S. Military while explaining her hybrid nature.
Having been infected by alien DNA during his mission to Mars, Patrick tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head with a rifle, horrified with the gruesome deaths of women he had been having sex with. Treacherous and regenerative, the alien species reconstituted Patrick's head, as Dennis witnessed. After this, the creature fully took over Patrick's body and conscience.
Eve, guided by her mating instinct, was able to regenerate herself from her wounds after she was shot several times by the Biohazard 4 facility security.
Species III[]
Sara terrified a human woman by regenerating her arm, which had been chopped off on the train track as she chased her potential mate, Yosef.
The Awakening[]
Azura regenerated herself after Tom crushed her with a crucifix. She was also unharmed after being impaled by one of Miranda's spikes.
Notes[]
- This ability startles humans more than once in the series and is displayed as an indication of the hybrids' real nature.
- The hybrids in Awakening appear to have a lessened form of accelerated regeneration.
- Azura does not recover from the shots inflicted by Tom.
- Miranda was already weakened, which could explain why she could not heal from the wounds inflicted by Azura.
- Calderon does not recover from Miranda's stabbing and dies.
- H.R. Giger originally wanted Sil to be fireproof.
- In Species, Sil's accelerated regeneration appears to require a certain amount of concentration from her.
- In Species II, Laura explained that Eve's hybrid biology can adapt to whatever was used to harm her. earlier in the film, she was exposed to a toxic gas and suffered welts that soon regenerated, and later, she was shot by security soldiers, apparently becoming immune to bullets after regenerating.
- This would likely apply to other human-alien hybrids that possess the ability to regenerate, adapting to whatever harms their bodies short of fire and human blood containing diseases they can’t defend themselves against.
